Not all Physical therapists are created equal

In my opinion there is a general perception amongst the public, doctors, and other healthcare professionals that physical therapy is the same no matter where you go. I’m here to tell you that not all physical therapists are created equal.

When you ask people if they have had physical therapy before, they say yes and it typically consists of heat and cold packs, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and exercises. Results tend to be all over the place as far as success goes with this approach. If people haven’t experienced physical therapy, the first perception and opinion is usually shaped by someone who has experienced PT, and I don’t know why, but the PT profession has the reputation as pain and torcher specialists.

Physical therapy is so much more than hot and cold packs, modalities for pain, and exercises. Any physical therapist who is worth their time and money is a person who actually hears and listens to the patient, their concerns, their beliefs, and their experiences. The physical therapist should have 99% of the picture before even watching the patient move, assessing their mobility, strength, or general function. A great PT should be able to educate patients on their symptoms, conditions, and the rehab process that is going to ensue in order to get them back to their desired lifestyle. They should be able to adapt treatment based on response to treatment. Also, no one is the same. The recommended treatment for shoulder impingement (for example) for individual #1 may be completely different from the approach for individual #2. Treatment should focus on best available evidence we have to date, hands-on treatment, exercises, education, reducing fear and anxiety, modifying activity and not taking away activity, providing motivation and empowerment.

At Elite Health and Wellness we strive to provide the best treatment approach that will help patient get back to quality of life that matters most.
